Grin and Bare It

Tuesday, January 31, 2012
Fashion week is just around the corner and you can count on a great number of fashion segments put on by our favorite style experts, correspondents and the like showing off the hottest trends and undoubtedly telling the one plus size model in the segment who is meant to represent all fat chicks across America, the best ways to "flatter her figure".

Lately the word "flatter" in these style segments feels much more like it's meant to say hide. I feel sort of torn, the J.Lo's and Kim K's of the world have pushed mainstream media to accept a big bootie girl in a bandage dress and to "appreciate her curves", which is fantastic. However, there are many more body types than the coveted hour glass and they certainly don't all want to wear dark washed, boot cut jeans and a white button down top.

Oh pish tosh blah blah blaaaah. I hate the political B.S. Wear whatever the hell you want. Wear a freaking Thunder Cats costume for all I care. Here's what I felt like wearing today. The good folks at Fashion to Figure sent me this top. Loves it. It's actually on sale right now if you want one...

Sorry for rambling, I really did start out with something I felt like talking about and the more I thought about it, the more I thought "Whateverrrr". LOL sorry. I tried.

Here's what I'm wearing:
Sweater - c/o Fashion to Figure
Leggings - Macy's
Shoes - Barefoot Tess

Saturday AM Sequins

Happy weekend everybody! I'm visiting my family in Philly, decided to snap a few pics before heading out on a few adventures with my Mummy and Sis. This outfit is just easy weekend wear. You already know I'm in love with printed pants and I found these for $20 on 125th Street in Harlem! Gotta love it. Lots of cool prints...I bought three (don't judge me).

I had a strong urge to wear sequins so, I added this tank top that from LYS for Kmart. It's probably critical to wear sequins at least once a week. Good for your...heart health? Or...something. Ha!

Here's what I'm wearing:

Denim Top - OSP
Tank - LYS for Kmart
Jeggings - 125th St.
Booties - BFT
Earrings - Bday gift from bestie Rosa

It's easy to get caught up in how the world perceives you. The way I see it, you can never take yourself too seriously. If you don't have a sense of humor about things and are always uptight and stressed out, you miss out on some really amazing opportunities to experience new things and to learn about yourself. Just a thought I had today...

These glasses are pretty fun and kind of made my day just having them on. My best friend - Super Stylist Meeka Johnson's mom (the queen shopping and clothes hoarder who taught us so well), recently let me raid her ultra fab collection of vintage frames. She had some pretty incredible ones that she gave me and ultimately took back lol but I managed to snag this pair. Hellooooo 1984.

Work it

Happy Hump Day! This week has been crazy busy and it's only Wednesday. All amazing things, busy certainly much better than not, that's for sure. There are so many really fun amazing projects that I'm working on including one near and dear to our "curvy" hearts, Full Figured Fashion Week. Beyond happy to be a part of it this year leading the publicity.

It's funny, all of the things I'm working on right now require so much time and attention but I feel amazing. When you're doing what you love, sometimes it doesn't feel like work. Like when you have a 3three hour client meeting and you don't even want it to end. So with work in mind...I decided to post an outfit that's sort of a "Kellie work outfit".

What's crazy is that when I posted pics of me in a leopard blazer and ripped jeans and called the post "business casual", I got so many responses from new followers about how "I could never wear those jeans to work" etc. For those that know me you know that 1. I don't follow conventional fashion rules and 2. my job isn't exactly "normal" so, baring any corporate client meetings...I'm usually dealing with wild people dressed far more "cray" than moi.

I guess this is a bit more traditional, a button down top but I did it my way. I layered this tie waist, hounds tooth, sheer, button down over a midi dress. I kind of love it...

Here's what I'm wearing:
Blouse - Avenue
Dress - Rachel Pally
Necklace - Kenneth Jay Lane
Watch - Burberry
Bag - Badgley Mischka
Booties - Faryl Robin

Domino Dollhouse Vamp Collection

Tuesday, January 24, 2012
A favorite amongst the indie plus size fashion scene and bloggers alike, Domino Dollhouse is camp, meets pinup meets bad ass fat girl all rolled in one. It sort of reminds me of one of my favorite movies Cry Baby. I would have totally been a Drake.

Designer Tracy Broxterman started the line in 2009 and it's ever expanding. While everything might not be for me, I can definitely appreciate the charm. Besides, where else can you go if you need a 14+ raspberry colored petticoat.

The latest addition to the line is called the Vamp Collection which just went live all of an hour ago. Just in time for Valentine's Day naughtiness. Check out a few of my favs! A leather corset? Yes, please.

Faux Fur a Go

Sunday, January 22, 2012
We've had our first snow fall here in NYC and I survived! Granted, 4-5 inches of snow isn't exactly life threatening but that's just how much I dislike this part of wintry weather. My week has been incredibly productive, fun, action packed...lots of hang time with those I love hanging with etc.

So for the weekend, it was all about chilling out. Finally checked out Mission Impossible...Tom Cruise never disappoints. The much publicized scene of him hanging from the world's tallest building literally had me on freaking out on the edge of my seat! A few dinners, a birthday party and brunch. Awesome weekend.

On to the wears. I live for this color combination. I don't have a ton of red in my wardrobe but whenever I do wear it, I automatically reach for something camel colored, tan or something in that family to pair it with. Easy comfy weekend wears.

Here's what I'm wearing:
Coat - Michael Kors - Via Bloomingdales
Top - Cable & Gage via TJ Maxx
Jeans - DKNY c/o Lane Bryant
Bag - Louis Vuitton
Necklace - Vintage stolen from my Mummy

Mint Condition(ing) Fatshion Insider for Skorch Magazine

Wednesday, January 18, 2012
Check out my latest piece for Skorch Magazine! I'm talking pastels...

New Yorkers are known for existing in a constant state of ‘cool’ but I really can’t imagine how it will be possible to walk around without a cheesy smile plastered across one’s face because spring 2012 all about color. And, color makes you happy. From bright saturated hues to pale pastels, I’m sort of convinced that soon cities across the globe will look like one big Skittles commercial, “taste the rainbow”…and I love it!
I’m all about a pop of color so, the bright hues aren’t really anything new to me. However, I’m completely caught up in the whimsy of all of the pastels making their way into nearly every retailer. Over the last few months we’ve even seen pastels pop up in people’s hair (swoon)! Though you may have visions of your grandmother’s Easter suit when you think of dressing in pastel colors (hmm, was that just me?), there are so many really cool modern takes on how to incorporate them into your wardrobe. Imagine how fun color blocking lavenders and mint greens with beige and coral will be.
Below are a few must haves on my list! While you may not dye your hair like the fab Kelly Osbourne below, a great pair of skinny jeans, a chunky sweater, a dress, perhaps even sexy shoes in Cadbury colors are a worthy investment!

Get the look!

  1. Lantern Sleeve Pointelle Sweater
  2. Ralph Lauren Collection Scarf
  3. Rachel Pally White Label “MYRA” Dress
  4. Miu Miu Ruched Leather Clutch
  5. Pastel Hued Hair
  6. Gisela Ramirez Reversible Chiton
  7. ASOS Bitten Leather Platform
  8. ASOS Curve Exclusive Lavender Skinny

Head to Toe

Monday, January 16, 2012
I've been having fun taking a few spring 2012 trends out for a test drive and one that I really love is the head to to print look. Flipping through the February issue of InStyle, I saw this amazing page featuring all over prints from suits to jumpers, separates - YUM.

This weekend when I was thinking about layers to battle the 20 degree temps (and still not quite ready to submit to a floor length bubble coat) I thought...ok, a nice cozy sweater. Then I thought, how can I make this interesting? So I mixed prints as I often do and loved this look. Sort of a tip toe into a full head to to print look. I'm actually really excited to do a head to toe print when I find the right one.

I'm sure some would say that a (curvy, plus size, fat - whatever you identify as) woman wearing head to toe prints is a no-no however, I don't subscribe to conventional rules of what I should and shouldn't wear. Whether you want to try this trend on for size or not, I think it's really important to step outside of your comfort zone and for all of those "I'd never wear this or that" moments, just try it. Be audacious in your fashion choices!

Here's what I'm wearing:
Studded Jacket - Lane Bryant
Printed Cardigan - Ruche
Printed Jeans - Random store on 125th
Snood - ASOS
Bright Yellow Bag - Rebecca Minkoff
Shades - Marc by Marc Jacobs
