Sunday en Havana

Sunday, January 30, 2011
Sunday brunch is just the freaking best. My uber fab crutch and I have to keep things local but luckily there are lots of good brunch spots close by. One of my besties and I went to Havana Cafe for Cuban inspired deliciousness. Ever excited to leave the house I started snapping pics in my hallway before I even left the apt.

Way too excited for french toast haha...ahhh good times.

I got this maxidress durring my Asos raid and due to the fact that I was unknowingly transported to Siberia aka NYC on Ice, I really wanted to wear something that reminded me of warmer days. Since most of my outtings are to my Ortho and the corner coffee shop, I'm beyond excited for the opportunity to put on more than sweats.

My last OOTD blog post was about mixing textures and patterns to add interest to an outfit and I got an overwhelming response asking me to talk more about mixing patterns. I was on Tumblr the other day (my new obsession) and a girl...sorry I forgot who you were mama but, someone mentioned this website: www.missphit.com. Not a huge selection but some really cute pieces that aren't your run of the mill thing.

I knew I wanted to do a post about the site as I hadn't heard of it so I figured a few others might not have either but I also wanted to address mixing patterns since so many gals emailed me about it. Below are a few looks that when scrolling through the site, you might not think to put together but the key to mixing patterns is that they should complement each other not compete.

My favorite thing about Missphit is that most everything is under $50. Sizes 1x-3x (14-22). I ordered this incredible topper/jacket that I'd love to show you but it was the last one so the image is gone. I tried ordering it online and it said sold out so of course I called the 800# and there was one left in my size so they took my order over the phone...fantastic customer service. When it arrives, I'll do and OOTD post.

HOW DO YOU WEAR THESE?
1. pair this with a wide leg dark denim trouser
2. add bold gold jewelry and black pumps or patent leather sandal
2. pair this with a pair of skinny chinos rolled tight at the ankle with edgy platform pump

OOTD: NO MORE KNEE BRACE! (for these photos)

Fiiiiinally! There have only been a handfull of times since I sprained my knee that I've actually been fully dressed beyond sweats. Unfortunately most of that was totally unblog worthy or there was no way I was going to ask my Ortho to snap a pic of my outfit haha!

Fast forward to today. I actually got dressed and though these pictures suck because I had no help...AND haven't mastered my self timer on my (obsconded) camera...they are of an outfit I really like.

Though fairly dark in terms of coloring it's a fun mix of patterns and textures. I would have thrown on some snazzy shoes but I'm simply unwilling to further jack up my knee for you kids lol so...sorry I'm barefoot! (my nail color is Russian Navy if you care)

Dear Asos,
I love you heart and soul...swear but I have one issue. There are like 4.7 million styles in the straight size collection. Asos brand styles, many of which I want! Can you pleeeease make more of them in Curve. I mean if dress X comes in regular size and your Curve customer wants it too, why not...ya'know?

My Cousin Vinny - unlikely fatshion muse

Tuesday, January 11, 2011
Due to my current less than mobile status, rather than my normal gallivanting and shenanigan filled weekends...this past weekend was filled with visits from friends and TELEVISION! I'm not exactly a tv enthusiast as I can't pay attention to the tube for long but while flipping channels I came across cult classic "My Cousin Vinny".

How could I pass that up? So, I'm mildly amused and watching the flick when I noticed I was paying more attention to Marisa Tomei's character Mona Lisa Vito's wardrobe than the story line. Tough and sexy with a dash of sass and edgy accessories. YUM! Yes, there is a resurgence of 80's/90's fashion and rocker chic is certainly having its fashion moment but I was really fascinated by how relevant the fashion in this 1992 movie was for my current wardrobe desires.

Black skinny jeans, cropped leather, body con dresses with cool cut outs, studs and grommets...from the blonde streak in her brunette tusseled locks to the sexy boots, all I could think was I want all of this stuff!

Here's what's happening now: Dress - Evans, Shades - Alexander Wang, Black Mini - Torrid

White Studded Faux Leather Jacket- Torrid, Head Wrap - Babooshka Boutique, Pink Camera the grandchild of the pink camera Marisa is holding in above picture - Sony Cyber Shot

Lace insert tights - Asos, Chain earrings - Shopbop.com, Black and white jacket - Evans, Boots - Alexander McQueen

Here's a little quicky post...one of my fav bloggers Stephanie Zwicky of LeBlogDeBigBeauty did a video tutorial on headbands which I thought was super cute and decided to try one of her suggestions. I really do love hair accessories and depending on my mood can be pretty good about utlizing the ones I have but I want to step it up and really play with different hair styles. My hair is curly and I usually just wear a part in the middle or a big bun on the top of my head so; here's to being a little more creative! Thanks for the tip Stephanie!

It's incredibly easy but looks really polished! just put an elastic headband on over your hair and fold the loose ends up and tuck them into the band - et viola!

Headband by Tasha: I got it at one of my favorite stores, Nordstrom Rack. Original price $22, I got it for $9.97! Woo hoo!

city chic - here's what I'm thinkin'

Saturday, January 8, 2011
It's been a while since my last blog post...please do forgive me but I have one terribly unfashionable word for you: CRUTCHES! ugh. Anyhoo, I'll try to work in OOTD posts here and there but right now my wardrobe consists of easy to pull on sweats and that's hardly interesting. So, back to businesss!

City Chic launched in the US a few months ago and I must admit, I was sort of excited. They had these titillating emails with a count down clock enticing me to check back with the website as they delayed the launch for a few weeks. When it finally went live my first response was..."seriously?" A hand full of "eh" pieces that were a little to juniors department for my taste.

Fast forward to a few days ago: I went onto CityChicOnline.com and thought, hmmm...now we are talking! It reads to me like a hybrid of Torrid and Asos. There is still a fair amount of "eh" but there are also some pretty stand out pieces that don't look like stuff you can find anywhere and really are CHIC. Below are a few of my favs:

The above Mesh Studded Skater Top is my favorite thing on the site. The kimono style top has mesh inserts on the shoulders and back and looks effortlessly cool. I love easy tops that are comfy but have dope details that add interest. This will be MINE, oh yes...it will be mine!
The So Cute Contrast dress (blk/coral) is really "so cute" but looks like a few things I already own so I don't feel like I'm dying to have it but it's adorable and worth featuring. To be honest if the black bodice where white it'd be a little more edgy and more of something I want to own. The Caltlyn Maxi dress is great. Something I'd want to wear to a pool party with embellished flats. And lastly the Zip Front Dress has a fantastic geometric print and is great for now with tights and leather or summer with sandals. *Thumbs UP*

These Self Tie Cargo slacks seem sooooo versatile! Pair them with a slouchy jersey top, a sexy tuxedo blazer or even this Silver Lace Top. I forever love denim but trousers are the new sexy. Pumps, Chuck Taylors, Flip Flops...Hotness.
